Racing summary – Mornington Park (25/8/20)
BTCC – Scalex
The first unveiling of vehicles for the new series today & it was a good looking range of BTCC cars that graced Dave Grays track. As usual, the standard of track preparation was perfect & had been tailored to suit these Scalex cars with the appropriate level of track grip from the get go. In fact, Dave was very strict on pre-event practice, clamping down on those drivers who normally rack up thousands of laps before the racing actually starts….…(names withheld!) & this approach certainly helped with the handling of this class & contributed to some very close racing during the evening.
Phil produced a performance a class above this week, and was the only driver & car to really master Lane 3, which most of the rest of us had different degrees of trouble with. A consistent 113 laps in the VW Passat was 5 laps clear of another well driven VW of John Batich, who was 2nd with 108, and Adrian Grays Honda (3rd) on 107. Rob Golley’s Honda was almost as zippy and turned out 106 laps to slot into 4th, 1 lap clear of myself in 5th on 105 in the first of the MGs ….a result that does not bode particularly well for the Morris Garages drivers in the field….or even the Nanjing Automobile Group drivers for that matter. In an equally worrying result for Germany, Rhys was the first of the BMW drivers in 6th, 4 laps back on 101 ahead of the next MG driven by Dave Bantoft on 100 laps in 7th.
On a side note, whilst writing this report up, I did wonder when the owners of MG (Nanjing Automobile Group) intended on updating the badge on their vehicles. I fully expect that the MG badge will be replaced by a badge titled - NAG very soon. In fact, if this were a horse racing series, this name would be extremely appropriate for the cars in question.
So, back to the racing & Dave Gray in his brightly coloured BMW was 8th on 97 laps, just ahead on track position from Chris Priest in 9th also on 97 laps. Tom Males with the 3rd of the Hondas finished off the field in 10th on 86 laps.
1st – Phil, 2nd – JB, 3rd – Adrian
