Racing summary – Shelmore Park (14/7/20)
Fly Sports GT
This weeks first run class saw Round 2 of the restarted Fly Sports series taking place once again at Phils Shelmore Park circuit, and the one thing that was made very obvious was that those of us who had managed a decent result in the first round were quickly jolted back into reality. The standard of the competition went up quite a few notches this week and showed that anyone guilty of smugly resting on their laurels of a top 3 finish in round 1 for example……well, didn’t have it the same way this week. To highlight this was the fact that a total lap score of 94 would have got a 3rd place in round 1, but this week that same lap total only just scraped into the top 10 ! Another level indeed.
The top bracket of racing was of an extremely high standard, and first place getter Adrian Gray drove beautifully in the well-used, but still very well prepared Ferrari 512 to finish on 106 laps. In a very welcome sight & a great return drive, Rob Golley put in a strong performance to be only 1 lap back (105) in second, just ahead of Phil on 104. Chris M had much better luck this week with no wheel disasters, and this allowed him a great result in 4th well clear on 103 laps from John Batich in 5th & myself (6th) on a nice round 100 laps.
The high standard of racing seemed to drag everyone along, and there was no-body from the first round who didn’t improve their lap count in this round. Rhys in 7th improved 5 laps, Dave Bantoft (8th) improved 1 lap, Dennis Murray made a 2 lap improvement to finish 9th & Bruce notched up an extra 3 laps this week to round out the top 10.
Chris P just missed out on the top 10 finishing on the same lap as Bruce, which was again, an extra 3 lap improvement. Dave Gray on 89 laps (up from 87), Callen Thomas on 87 laps & Tom Males with a significant 5 lap improvement up to 82 laps rounded out the 14 driver field.
