Racing summary – Mornington Park (6/10/20)
Group C (Slot-it)
Scrutineering !....a word to strike immediate fear & panic in the hearts of all & sundry. The scrutineering of chassis height in this race class proposed by Phil led to a hive of activity as cars were placed on the test bed & found to lower than the acceptable level……this despite some of them being unchanged as they came off the shelf. The room resembled a nest of jack-jumpers who’ve had their nest prodded with a large stick as everyone hurridly made last minute adjustments to ensure regulations were met. Finally, with most drivers meeting the criteria, the racing got underway……and during the course of the evening we saw both the best & the worst of Lancia. The best was demonstrated once again by Callen, with a second victory in succession (after Callan had taken out round 1). The worst of Lancia will be detailed later on. Callen's total of 131 laps was a model of quick enough driving paired with consistency and saw him 2 laps clear of 2nd place-getter Adrian Gray. Adrian flew around the track in some blistering times, but his slightly inconsistent stint on lane 3 cost him in his challenge for the outright win and he finished on 129 laps. Another 3 laps back Phil took 3rd place on 126 to make up a top 3 that were in a class of their own….some 5 laps ahead of the nearest driver. Rhys stood alone on 121 in 4th before the duo of Bruce & Rob G both finished on 120 laps. Bruce took out 5th on this occasion from Rob in 6th. JB alone on 118 laps grabbed 7th, 3 laps clear of Chris P in 8th with a good drive who was another 2 laps clear of the ever-reliable Lancia of yours truly in 9th on 113……No, wait. Reliable isn’t the word I’m looking for is it? In a performance harking back to the “golden years” of Lancia's electrical systems (the Beta, the Fulvia etc) my own Lancia suffered electrical complaints for the 2nd time in 3 rounds & came to a complete stop halfway through the final heat. SO much for my optimistic attitude that I’d fixed the problem.
Dave Gray turned out a good 106 laps to finish 10th, 1 lap clear of Dennis Murray in 11th (105) & Chris M in 12th on 103. Chris M was another victim to the electronic gremlins that are proving a feature of this class and this certainly kyboshed his own performance on Lane 1. Thomas rounded out the driver for the evening in 13th on 94 laps total. Some work to do for some us before the next round of this series
See you all next week for some action in the dark !
1st - Callan, 2nd - Adrian, 3rd - Phil
