Racing Summary - Round 1
Racing summary – Mornington Park 16/1/20LMP
In the LMP Le Mans series round 1, the mood of the drivers immediately improved with the introduction of these foam tyre shod & (mostly) well-sorted rockets. Phil’s beautifully prepared & well driven entry won the day, this time from the elder Thomas in an equally lovely looking & well sorted car. Bruce then ensured his placing by a couple of very subtle but strategic offs during his stint as Callen. On the same lap as the third place getter was Chris, again showing what a good car & not coming off can manage to achieve. A simple formula really, not quite sure why it’s not more popular? Adrian was back to near his best in 5th with his car preparation also back to usual high standard, although these cars are obviously quite an easy one to sort, evidenced by my own mid field placing.
There was close racing between Rhys & Rob & then Dave Bantoft won the battle of the Dave’s this time round ahead of a markedly improved showing from Leon. His use of the prehistoric art of sticky tape on tyres proving that old dogs sometimes don’t need new tricks. Second of the Dave’s, Dave Schofield, obviously found this class far more to his liking as well, even winning his close battle with John Batich. JB must have spent a bit too much time cultivating his upper lip feature instead of working on this particular car. I’m sure that his usual impeccable standard will be resumed asap though. Dave Gray, Dennis & Dave Jenkins completed the line-up for the evening, but there certainly didn’t look as though there was a bad car in this entire class, unless you count Dennis’s first option in his first bracket. I’m sure Den is still asking himself why he decided to run with this car as first choice. All in all, a good return to racing for 2020, great to see the strong participation numbers, may this continue through the year. Rhys’s Forestry Tasmania sponsored track next week.
