Round 7 - Summary of Racing

Final Round of the V8 Supercars this week, and the closeness of the top 4 drivers over the entire series was highlighted in this final round. Leading up to this week, there were two drivers locked together for 1st place (Phil & JB on 118) & two drivers just 2 points behind (Adrian & Dave Bantoft) on 116. It all came down to the final race, and no-one could afford to drop this rounds results. At the end of the round there was a clear winner though, as Phil drove supremely to win the round 3 laps ahead of his nearest rival, and take out the series by a comfortable 3 points. The next 3 positions were not quite as clear cut however. Each of the three drivers in contention for the remaining podium positions in the series all drove very well & all finished on a total of 98 laps for the round…..so it was down to track position to sort out the lucky from the unlucky. Adrian Gray grabbed 2nd place for the round, ahead of Dave Bantoft in 3rd by about half a meter, & John Batich down in 4th but also on the same number of laps. The upshot of all this for the series was that a fast-finishing Adrian Gray just pipped JB for 2nd on a very close countback. JB, who dropped to 3rd overall, lost out due to having 1 less 2nd place result over the series. Dave Bantoft was a very unlucky 4th overall, but suffered from a run of 4th place finishes in the middle of the series before hitting top form again for the tail end heats.

That rounded out the first division in this class 7 it was quite a gap back to the rest, both in this round & the series. In 5th place this week (& overall) on 95 laps was yours truly, followed by 2 drivers on 93 laps (Dave Schofield in 6th & Rob Golley in 7th). Rob Golley got the 6th place in the series though. Rhys grabbed 8th all on his own by racking up 92 laps, ahead of Chris Priest (9th) on 88, Dave Gray (10th) on 85 laps & Leigh Stephens in 11th on 81. Leigh Stephens as Thomas Males was only 2 laps back to finish in 12th for the night.

The end of yet another closely fought Scalex series. They might not be the quickest cars going around by a long way, but each Scalex series certainly seems to provide some of the closest, most even racing of all of the series that we run……and that can’t be a bad thing.
