Racing summary – Shelmore Park (23/9/20)
WRC Rally (2WD)
Back to the Rally again at Phils and this time round it was decided via a thorough voting process (a motley show of hands after the stages had been run) that tonight’s rally would be broken down into a separate round for each track. So ……
Well, the standard for this series seems to go to another level every time we show up, and tonight was no exception. Maybe it’s due to all the drives getting a good amount of practice on these the 2 rally tracks, with no others being used at this time. Chris Priest led the way from the get-go, his noisy but very quick entry set a very high & faultless standard that all of us to follow would have to be on our best to compete with. As it turned out, the very next competitor, JB, raised the bar even higher to be the first driver under 150. Then by the time Rob had followed John with another sub 150 run, the rest of us could only go downhill from there! Apart from Phil of course, who slashed 3 seconds off JBs time to take out this round. JB deserved his 2nd place, as did Rob his 3rd. I didn’t seem to do anything wrong, but the top end of the field was so quick that 4th was the best I could come up with, just ahead of that great drive from Chris P in 5th. Bruce & Callen Thomas were next in 6th & 7th & only separated by 3 tenths, with Adrian following in 8th & the victim of an unusual number of inexplicable offs. Dave Bantoft was chuffed to grab 9th and took great delight in letting Rhys know…..in case he didn’t already know that he’d finished next in 10th. Dave Gray & Thomas Males rounded out the field in 11th & 12th
1st - Phil, 2nd - JB, 3rd - Rob
Onto the always tricky Hillclimb for Round 4, and as usual, one corner in particular caused more than its fair share of problems. Luckily this very nasty hairpin is located quite conveniently right in front of the driver, thus allowing quick & efficient marshalling, or just a prod with a finger to get the car around the corner. Again, Phil lead the way on this stage to take out Round 5 and complete the double. Rob’s great form continued & vaulted him up into 2nd for this stage, well clear of myself in 3rd. Callen grabbed 4th, ahead of Adrian (5th), Bruce (6th) & JB in 7th. Very narrow margins separated all of these drivers, and it wasn’t much different as we moved onto Chris P in 8th with another solid (if not quite as perfect as his first stage) effort. Dave Bantoft again took bragging rights over Rhys to beat him into 9th place, with Rhys again finishing up 10th. Dave Gray & Thomas Males fell foul of the dreaded hairpin as well, and finished the 2nd round in the familiar positions of 11th & 12th.
1st - Phil, 2nd - Rob, 3rd - Mal
